I met Tommy @balloonsbytommy a little over 12 years ago when he hired me to help his team on this beautiful job. Little did I know the legend he already was in our tight knit industry, or the huge personality he would have, and the friend I would be gaining. Tommy never gate kept, and has been a mentor and friend to so many. He had a love for life that was unparalleled and he fought hard to keep it. I was lucky to spend time with Tommy, his loving husband Scott, and our friend Tabitha the night before he went in for his stem cell treatment. I don’t think any of us wanted that night to end. Although we were in the middle of the city, it was like we were in a private oasis of quiet, and we sat in the garden as he took in beauty of the night and felt the wind on his skin. He loved to sit in his garden, and with his dogs, and just enjoy being outside - it was one of his happy places and I’m grateful I was able to spend some of his last moments before he went to the hospital for the last time with him. It’s really hard to put into words the impact he has had in our community, and why so many of of us are hurting so deeply right now. Tommy was my brother, in the family we have forged together. You will be so missed by so many. I’m heartbroken.

Fun fact: the DNC and RNC balloon drops are always filled by volunteers. This year 55 balloon artists came together to create the drops in record time to support our friend Tommy @balloonsbytommy as he undergoes treatment for stage 4 lymphoma in Chicago. Tommy is pure joy, and nothing brings him more joy than balloons. So we rallied him during this critical time, to visit, pray, and give him and his husband Scott love, support, and JOY during this critical time in his treatment while creating a monumental and historic drop during a historic moment in time. There is so much more to this story… Last week, in a remarkable show of solidarity, I was one of 55 balloon artists, including Treb Heining, who put our businesses on hold or trusted our teams, at a moment’s notice to travel to Chicago from 18 states and Canada. Our mission was clear: to support our dear friend and respected colleague, Tommy, the owner of @balloonsbytommy and his husband Scott, as Tommy battles cancer. Tommy, who has long been a beloved figure in the balloon artist community, found himself surrounded by the love and support of his peers when he needed it most. We joined forces to create the breathtaking balloon drops for the Democratic National Convention  that will be seen tonight. This family has a lot to celebrate! Two looks for two events just a couple of weeks apart. First a bridal shower, and then a berry sweet baby shower! The same space is transformed in different ways for each event. Which is your favorite? Can we talk about my inability to take good pictures? These were evening night before setups, thanks fam, but the shadows really darkened both the backdrops and balloons, even with editing and flash. I know sometimes it’s hard to wrap our heads around pricing, and I’ve had people tell me you want how much for balloons?!! So here’s the thing, yes we use professional grade balloons, and yes those are much more expensive and have to be purchased in bulk counts compared to what the average consumer is familiar with . However, the balloon is just a tiny portion of what is involved in the final cost. Labor: time to preinflate to stretch the balloon so it performs better, reinflate, tie, assemble, load, drive, install, drive back, put away and organize materials, drive back to tear down, strike, 4th trip back to warehouse, unload, organize, clean props and frames. Add in sales, marketing, taking inventory, and other labor intensive behind the scenes work that goes into every install. On this job we also saw this big storm coming through and where we use the aeropole system $$$ for our outdoor setups, I didn’t think anything was withstanding that storm. We made the call to take it down last night, and put it back up this morning for the client. This ensured we not only provided the highest level of service, but that our frame didn’t get damaged AND MORE IMPORTANLTY wouldn’t damage the awning or lights at our customer’s property although we have liability insurance. So add 8 hours of total labor to this job at no additional charge. (2 people for two hours to drive and take down, move it inside last night and and 2 to reassemble and install this morning) Professional equipment: our @premiumconwin inflators build a spiral arch perfectly with its timer function, professional bases and framework, and weights. Storage: rent for our warehouse space to have a place to build and store inventory. Transportation: we need vans large enough to transport, gas, tolls, parking… Insurance: on all of the above 💸. Continuing education: classes and conventions to learn techniques and business practices. Website, phones, computers, crm, processing fees, payroll taxes, cricut and canva subscriptions… what did I miss? Why did we hang instead of use helium? ⬇️⬇️⬇️ If we would have helium filled these jumbo 24 inch then not only would have the pool have been off limits during their party, but they would have fallen during the pop up thunderstorm that wasn’t in the forecast. Water on the balloons increases weight and often times on a windy day, or during a sprinkle they can come down. Weather in this heat and humidity can be unpredictable and I am so glad we went this route to fill the space with groups of jumbo latex that moved in the wind, instead of the traditional pool installation We installed pulleys in the tree and secured the extra twine to the fence at the property line. We then ran the twine across the yard and attached to two other trees in the yard in a v to attach the balloons and fill the space.
